BFRND
In this installment of our Monthly Muse we explore the style of the understated techno-symphonic musician/artist Loïk Gomez, better known as BFRND. Husband to Demna, creative director of Balenciaga, Loïk is without a doubt an instrumental piece in the creation of the flooring spectacle we come to expect from Balenciaga. BFRND is responsible for orchestrating the unnerving and hard-hitting soundtracks to the thought-provoking Balenciaga shows, a role he has taken on since Balenciaga’s A/W 17 show. “I compose everything from scratch hand by hand with Demna. We create chapters in reaction to the looks that hits the runway to make a full story.” BFRND’s style perfectly conveys the ever changing character of the season for Balenciaga. Rather than wearing the Balenciaga uniform, BFRND embodies the energy and persona that bleeds through the gaps of every collection. It could be because Demna and BFRND both pull much inspiration from the Black Metal and cyber goth aesthetic, tropes that are often subverted into many Balenciaga looks. In my estimation BFRND’s ability to wear Balenciaga with such ease and nonchalance, is due his genuine interest and deep understanding of all the themes and inspirations that informs Demna’s work for Balenciaga.
